November-December Book of the Month

The Academic Coach's Response

Bunnicula

By Deborah and James Howe

I have to tell you that I read ten reviews of the book, Bunnicula, before I sat down to write mine.  I want to be careful not to "spoil" the book by telling too much (especially before you complete reading / hearing the book.)

I want to tell you about four aspects of the book that I think are exemplary.  To begin with, I love animals (my family owns a cat that even sleeps with my husband and me!)  So when this book has the main characters being a dog (who is even the narrator), a cat and a rabbit, I know I will like it.

Secondly, I love to smile and laugh.  Bunnicula is full of funny jokes (some for children and some for adults!) For example, look for when Harold and Chester discuss what vampires actually do ..... do you remember it?

Another aspect I like is that the book is considered an "early chapter book" (it's only 98 pages long) but the Howes have kept the action moving and the plot believable.  This provides for an excellent read-aloud because everyone can keep up with what is going on.

You will love the pictures, I did!  Alan Daniel is the illustrator, and he does an excellent job!  So many times pictures help me understand the characters and the plot.  Pictures are clues to help many of us comprehend the story (and the vocabulary.)

Please enjoy the book and the time you spend in activities that help extend the thoughts the concepts in the book created.

Keep on reading ... the Howes have written many more books (The Celery Stalks at Midnight, Howliday Inn, Bunnicula Strikes Again, and Return to Howliday Inn.
