The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka
Principal's Book of the Month Response
The author, Jon Scieszka, (pronounced "SHE-ska" like Fresca) is an avid reader. He reads everything, including cereal boxes! When he read the book, Green Eggs and Ham, as a young boy, it made him realize that books could be silly. Growing up, he always knew he wanted to be an author, though, he has done other jobs, such as, teach, paint houses, and was even a lifeguard. Mr. Scieszka is married with two children.
This is a feel-good book, in that you want to laugh out loud when hearing the wolf's side of this fairy tale. When A. Wolf submitted his story to "The Daily Wolf", he makes us see there is always more than one side to a story. It appears whoever is telling the story - pigs or wolf - their character is the one coming out looking innocent.
Jon Scieska does a very effective job of changing the point of view of the story. Usually the reader sympathizes with the pigs, but, A. Wolf wants to clear up what he sees as simple misunderstandings and believes you might just feel a little sorry for him when you hear his side. I mean, who could blame him for having a bad cold, right? Of course, he just couldn't help blowing house down when he had a powerful sneeze. Oh, well. You are the reader. You will decide who to believe - the pigs or the wolf?
Come to think of it, what about other fairy tales? How would they change if told from a different point of view? For example, what would Cinderella's stepsisters say that would change the story line of Cinderella?
Sit back, put your feet up, and have fun reading A.Wolf's version in The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!
